Menus become non functional on MacOS 10.7.4 after using escape key

After the user presses the esc key on MacOS, the menus of the app stop working.
Specifically:

The editor stops responding to navigation sequences such as Ctrl-A and Ctrl-E.

All items other than 'Search' disappear from the 'Help' menu.

Clicking on File->Save does nothing -- the 'File' menu gets selected and stays selected.

My environment is as follows:
Hardware: Macbook Pro
OS: MacOS 10.7.4
Redcar versions: 0.14.0dev (git revision ff1a671), 0.13
