"New" won't open a new document unless there is an open window

I can't reproduce this in Redcar 0.8.1.
If I fire up redcar from the commandline doing just
% redcar
I get a blank redcar editor with no file open and none listed.
I hit cmd-n.
I get a new Untitled document editor in the current window.
