Focus held after switches spaces (OS X)

This is kind of a specific problem to my personal workflow, but here it is anyway...
In OS X if redcar is running and has focus in one space, when switching to a different space which does not contain redcar it retains focus.
Here's my use case:
- redcar running in space #1
- FireFox running in space #2
- edit code in space #1 with redcar
- switch to space #2 to test code
After switching to space #2, I need to tab or click on FireFox to force FireFox to gain focus and redcar to lose it.
